On Location Photo Strategies:

When on site, I first socialize with the pets to develop a trust and rapport with your companion. This can be especially important with canines. During a dog photo session, this could mean just enjoying their company and allowing them to get to know you and your personality.

Felines are a different story. Cats tend to be very cautious and it takes a little more time to earn their trust. Once this has been established, a few kitten treats always brings the bond a little closer. Reptiles, on the other hand, are usually fairly easy going.

Once I arrive at the pet's home, I almost always begin to capture images immediately. Their attitude and nature allows me to get great portraits from any distance. This approach is also true with birds: the exception being moving in too close. Macaws in particular can have a split personality and take a bite out of your finger in no time. Following these guidelines, combined with my years of experience and love of animals, makes photographing pets in their homes, at the park, or in almost any spot, a joy and an exciting adventure for all involved.
